Pumpkin soup with caesar salad from Soup Spoon. Around 8 dollars (3 pounds!). Nothing better. Mmm.

(Yes I know, I’m in Singapore, I should be eating Lor Mein or Char Kway Teow or something I guess…)

Like, seriously?

Segway hits reverse as scooters are recalled
But the Segway electric scooter now seems to be heading the way of the Sinclair C5, after its manufacturers announced that all 23,500 models would be recalled today because of a software problem that causes it to throw off its riders.

Banksy’s painted elephant is illegal, say officials
Mr Boks ordered that the elephant be completely scrubbed down to bare skin and that a child-safe face paint be used instead. He said his agency had tried to have the permits revoked entirely on Friday, but to do so may have taken five days, by which time the exhibition would be over.

Speaking in general about the use of the elephant, Mr Boks said: “I think it sends a very wrong message that abusing animals is not only OK, it’s an art form. We find it no longer acceptable to dye baby chicks at Easter, but it’s OK to dye an elephant. Permits will not be issued for such frivolous abuse of animals in the future.”

Most iPod users don’t pay for music, says research
Despite the phenomenal success of Apple in building a market charging for music downloads, research has shown that more than 80% of iPod owners do not pay for digital music. [roo- seriously...why is this even news?]

Seriously?

College killer wanted to die ‘in a hail of gunfire’
A gunman who killed one woman and injured 19 others at a Montreal college before being shot dead by police left a chilling online profile, saying he wanted to die “like Romeo and Juliet - or in a hail of gunfire”.

Kazakhstan launches propaganda campaign against Borat
Baron Cohen’s previous comic character, Ali G, an aspiring gangsta rapper from Staines, did not achieve American mainstream success. But Borat, who appeared on Da Ali G Show on the high-profile cable channel, HBO, has taken on a life of his own. Borat now counts the actors Dustin Hoffman and Russell Crowe among his celebrity admirers. [roo - go search for Borat in Youtube.com if you have no idea what this about]

You were not a dictator, judge tells Saddam
Saddam, who is allowed to cross-examine witnesses, asked Mr Hussein: “Why did you try to see Saddam Hussein if Saddam Hussein was a dictator and was against the Kurdish people?”

It was at that moment the chief judge intervened. “You are not a dictator,” he said. ”You were not a dictator. However, the people or the individuals and officials surrounding you created a dictator [out of you]. It was not you in particular. It happened all over the world.”

A visibly surprised Saddam smiled. “Thank you,” he said, bowing his head in respect.

Sunset tinted glasses

Only through sunset tinted eyes is beauty truly seen.

Uh. Anyway, view from home. Nice. From bottom: Personal swimming pool, personal bar (Walas) and some certain extra coffee and not too bad burger joints.

At the risk of sounding out of character, it’s on days like the above that living in a (rather nice) flat on the 20 plus storey of a cramped packed pretty grubby building with crappy dirty little slow lifts seems worthwhile. Enjoying the cool breeze and just looking out onto what actually doesn’t seem too bad a view. Did you notice how much green there was in that view? Quite impressive if you think about it. And on top of that…

Damn Singapore is so small and boring. Ye-arck.

Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu

Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu

Yuko Takeuchi …. Mio
Shido Nakamura …. Takumi
Akashi Takei …. Yuji

Seriously, movies that dwell upon lovers lost and returning from the dead are not just stupid, but they’re seriously clichéd and overdone.

But if they’re set in a beautiful Japanese rural village with little boy jumping and smiling shouting ‘Oh-haiiii-oooo’ followed by awkward smiles between estranged ex-dead wife and quiet spoken deeply in love husband and a hesitant ‘ohio’, somehow they become wonderfully spiritual artistic.

Hence the story of Mio, the mother and wife, who returns as she promised during the rainy season a year after her unfortunate death to her husband, Takumi, and son, Yuji. A story that starts in a way reminiscent of certain Miyazaki productions of village roads and walks through deep forests, ‘Ima, ai ni yukimasu’ is a story one approaches with certain reservations but leaves with a deep doubt of one’s cynicisms to life. A beautifully crafted story that unravels and in the last 20 minutes or so leaves one reminiscing on the more subtle points of the movie.

Do not watch in parts, do not watch with jocks.

Also known as ‘Be With You’ and apparently there’s some stupid Hollywood plan to release an English version with Jennifer ’13 going on 30’ Garner. Dear Lord….

Interesting Part of Singapore #2

More Arab Street

I want this font. Beautiful real airbrush. No photoshopping, for once!

The Interesting Part of Singapore

Around Arab Street

Just for comments sake, if I could ever have my dream of a beach side cafe front, I think the exterior might look something like number 21; rustic, charming doors yet with freshly painted walls. I didn’t take the second floor, but they had beautiful mahogany (okay I’m just making an artistic guess about that) French windows that sort of had that inviting white-linen bed sheet covered four-posed bed sort of feel to it.
